What the test is for
The test checks your knowledge of life in the UK: its values, history, traditions, government and law.
Most people applying for settlement (ILR) or citizenship must pass it.
- 所有考题都来自官方手册《Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents》。All questions are based on the official handbook, *Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents*.
The test and the English language requirement are separate; you must meet both.
The test was introduced in 2005 to make sure new residents understand the society they are joining, from basic principles such as democracy and the rule of law to everyday traditions like Christmas and Hogmanay. It is not an English test, but every question is in English.
Many people assume passing the test gets them settlement. In fact it is only one part of the application: you also need the right residence period, English level and good character. A pass does not expire, so you can take it early and apply once you meet the other requirements.

Questions are drawn at random from a large bank, so everyone gets a different paper and memorising "real questions" does not work. The official question bank is never published, and anyone claiming to sell the actual questions should not be trusted. The reliable approach is to understand the handbook and then test yourself with plenty of practice questions.
Forty-five minutes for 24 questions is usually plenty of time; most people finish in 15 to 20 minutes. You can flag uncertain questions and come back to them. For "choose two" questions you must pick both correct answers to score.
Booking and test day
Book only through the official GOV.UK service; it costs £50 and must be booked at least 3 days ahead.
There are over 30 test centres around the UK; choose the one nearest to you.
The name you book with must match your ID exactly.
On the day, bring the same original ID you used to book; photocopies and screenshots are not accepted.
Your photo will be taken. If you bring the wrong ID or refuse a photo you cannot take the test and will not get a refund.
Accepted ID
If you have an eVisa, you need a share code from your UKVI account when booking. Without an eVisa you can use a valid passport; a valid ID card from the EU, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway; or a valid travel document with a photo (not an emergency travel document).
Test centres are strict: phones and bags are stored away, and you cannot bring paper, pens or notes. There are a few practice questions before the real test so you can get used to the screen; they do not count.
Who does not need to take it
Applicants under 18 or aged 65 or over do not need to take the test.
If you have passed before, you do not need to take it again; use your existing reference.
People with a long-term physical or mental condition that prevents them taking it can apply for an exemption with a form or doctor's letter.
Exemption rules follow the official guidance at the time you apply, and details can differ between routes. If you passed before 17 December 2019, you will have a "test reference ID" letter rather than a unique reference number; follow the application form's instructions.
English language: B1 now, B2 coming
B1(CEFR)。Most applicants must also prove speaking and listening at B1 (CEFR) level.
You can show this with an approved English test, a degree taught in English, or nationality of a majority English-speaking country.
B2。For settlement applications made from 26 March 2027, the requirement rises to B2.
B1 roughly means you can hold everyday conversations on familiar topics; B2 means you can speak more fluently on more complex subjects. The B2 requirement covers speaking and listening only. Skilled Worker and Scale-up applicants who first applied on or after 8 January 2026 already need B2.
How to prepare
The handbook follows one thread: values → what the UK is → history → modern society → government and law.
The history chapter is the longest and carries the most questions, so give it the most time.
Numbers and dates come up often: years, percentages, numbers of people, festival dates.
A two-week plan
Chapters 2–3: values and what the UK is
Chapter 4, history: one period a day, then the quick check
Chapter 5: festivals, sport and the arts
Chapter 6: government and law
Two or three mock sets a day; review every wrong answer in the chapter
Every chapter on this site has two layers: the serif "syllabus points" are the facts you need to remember, and the sans-serif "in depth" notes explain the background so the facts stick. If you are short of time, read all the syllabus points first and then do the mock tests.
